We just had to wait till the forecasted 30 Knot Nor Easter began to blow to head out for our Annual Christmas Get Together. As we head into the crazy summer season we took the opportunity to get together as a Team and take to the water with some wind and waves and do what we all love to do.

JBK Paddlers have returned from this years amazing Sea Kayaking Expedition to the Johnstone Strait BC Canada. This Sea Kayaking Trip was a sensational experience, with Daily Orca encounters, humpback whales ,seals , eagles, self contained camping, unbelievable food and the most incredible scenery imaginable.

JBK's Tracy Gibson and Ross Boardman lead the group of 12 into the Wilds of Canada with Brian & Erin from PNW Expeditions. Tracy has posted this video on You Tube which highlights what a superb trip this really was. Great job Tracy.

Our major shipment of Seaward Kayaks and parts have just arrived in Australia and some of our customers are already on the water this weekend with their new Seaward Kayaks. Our pre-sold Ascente and Chilco Composite Sea Kayaks have hit the water this weekend and our very own Tracy Gibson has scored herself a magnificent Chilco X3, and she is most impressed. Karen Dallas from Skee Kayak Ctr in Coffs Harbour and Tony and Annette are already beaming photos in to our Facebook Site with the key focus being speed, comfort and quality, quality, qaulity.

This month the JBK Team have conducted the Australian Canoeing Sea Skills Course for Charles Sturt University at Albury & Goulbourn Ovens VIC Tafe Certificate IV in Outdoor Education Course. As Go Tafes accredited providor this course was run over 5 days of intensive Training including an Overnight Sea Kayaking Trip , Eskimo Rolling, Rescue, Surf and Stroke Training.

Boambee Creek at sunny Sawtell on the NSW Mid North Coast was the venue for a great couple of Days of Training and Information last weekend.Hosted by Skee Paddle Ctr in Mulloway and Paddle NSW, the 2 day program saw 30 keen kayakers put through their paces. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to both Spend the weekend instructing and showing off the range of Seaward Kayaks.

The hungry participants were coached in every thing from forward paddling to technique by Australian Olympic Kayaker Amanda Rankin, to maneuvering, bracing, self and assisted rescues and surf launches and landings. Saturday afternoon was filled with talks from the likes of NSW Waterways, a Physiotherapists Specialising in the ergonomics of kayaking and the Marine Rescue Authority.

After the morning instruction session we unloaded the "Seaward Express " and showed the range of beautiful lightweight TX Thermoformed and composite Sea Kayaks to large group of very impressed paddlers. Interestingly our Red InfinitI 155 which I had been paddling all weekend was very popular with many of the female paddlers in the group who showed great capability without a rudder. Not so popular was Amanda's K1 Nelo Racing Shell ( which I failed to keep upright for more than about 6mtrs ). I think everyone who attended the weekend gained a great deal of practical kayaking knowledge which hopefully they can take a way and build upon, as well as learning heaps, and had heaps of fun whilst meeting a few new paddling friends.

Another great day was had by members of the JBK Paddlers Club as we hit the water again together on Sunday. The launch was Murray's Beach boat ramp inside JB for a foray outside to see what the cliffs of the Bherwhere Peninsula had to offer.

As far as weather forecasts go, ours was just about perfect; light westerly winds, no swell.

JBK Paddlers Club - Snapper Point Formation Sea Caves Jervis Bay

The team passed through an unusually calm Gap to find exactly what we were hoping for - calm seas and shelter from the breeze. This was a perfect opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the spectacular sea caves and rock formations along this part of our southern coastline. The crew took advantage of the favourable tide to land at Stoney Creek about 7kms down the coast, before the return trip back to the heads.

Although a stiff breeze (well maybe a strong headwind wind) greeted us coming back into the bay, everyone was happy to put their heads down and work hard for the 15min trip back to the boat ramp.

KAYAKTOPIA 2010 - MAJOR PRIZE WINNER

The Team here at JBK and our 2010 Kayaktopia Dealer Team are proud to anounce the winner of the Major Prize for this years Kayaktopia 2010. The final draw was held on Sunday afternoon at 1.45 PM in the Paddlers Courtyard, surrounded by the massive range of Kayaks on display.

The winner of the Seaward Intrigue Clear Bottom Recreatonal Kayak valued at $1500 was John and Kay Woodend. John and Kay are visiting from Melbourne and take the Intrigue home with them along with a Tribe 13.5 Sit On Top Double Kayak purchased earlier at Kayaktopia 2010. The guys scored 14 entries into our draw and were totally stoked with their luck. Ellen Boardman made the lucky pick out of the Sea to Summit Major Prize Drybag and the Draw was witnessed by a group of attendees.

Nerriga upgrade Complete :

The final stages of work on the Main Road 92 (MR92) upgrade are now complete, 3 Months ahead of schedule.

The road is one of few accesses from the tablelands to the coast and is a key component of strategies to provide a shorter and more importantly, alternate route to Jervis Bay than Kangaroo Valley and the windy mountainous Clyde Mountain / Batemans Bay route.

The Team here at JBK are very excited as this has cut travelling times from Canberra to Jervis Bay to 2 hours, and makes us all the more accessible to country clients that make there way for Equipment purchases, sea kayaking trips , Hire and our range of adventure services.

With summer coming we have already seen a marked increase in clients from Canberra and surrounding districts buying Kayaks and accessories from us and with "Kayaktopia Jervis Bay 2010" coming up next month we have seen good registrations of interest from Canberrans wanting to try out our massive range of Kayaks and equipnment on the 13th of November 2010 and our Paddlepsorts Expo all weekend, here at JBK in Huskisson.

JBK Paddlers Club - Beecroft Peninsula Trip

JBK Paddlers Club spent an amazing day yesterday ou towards Point Perpendicular and the Docks of Jervis Bay. Leaving from Honeymoon Bay in the morning, we spent a lazy hour or so cruising down to Dart & Longnose Points sighting a Green Turtle , Dolphins and a number of seals cooling themselves in the swell at Longnose Bommie.Dolphin Pod near Dart Point Jervis Bay

Rounding the Point we were greeted with a running 2 mtr swell and rebound conditions aswe headed to Bream Cove in Boat Harbour. The rebound reminded our group to concentrate on good forward stroke technique enabling good stability whilst moving forward.

Bream Cove had a nice little mtr high swell rolling in to it and it was nice to have a leg stretch and morning tea with the infamous JBK Banana cake sugar hit.

Paddling out towards the Torpedo Tubes and Sea Caves of the docks we were blesed with light but building Nor Easter which flattens the sea state in this area allowing close up and personal experiences with the rock formations and sea caves.

The swell still hindering access to the large U shaped Docks Sea Cave, Tracy and I gave it a go but decided ( very wisely ), not to venture in as a set wave rolled in exploding in to the back of the cave.

With the wind strengthening the decision to head back to Honeymoon Bay for lunch was made and a superb downwind run was had towards Longnose and back up into the wind as rode green swells back on the Montague Roadstead

After lunch, the group paddled up along Bindajine Beach and Long Beach playing in the Pylons of the Defence Wharf before heading home after a senstational day on the water. Thanks again guys it was a magic day on the water with you all.

This is the time of year when anything can happen in Jervis Bay. The water is cool, the weather is crisp and the wildlife , unbelievable. This winter has proved to boast the highest numbers of migratory whales, and this week we have had two Southern Right Whales along the Hyams Beach to Nelsons Beach strip. One of the whales is supporting her calf and the other is believed to be pregnant.

Janet and I ventured out today for our trip towards Hyams Beach and were lucky enough to spend almost three hours floating near her. Keeping a minimum distance of 100mtrs, was at times difficult as she expressed an interest in both of us and surfaced several mtrs away from both us. Although quite intimidating, she was very gentle and spent hours lying on the surface only to lay vertically with her tail in the air. Appearing also to become more animated when the whale watching boats and pleasure craft approached. The enormity of this whale was only evident when her head would stand out of the water, spyhopping to get a clear view, only to roll on her side and perform head stands.

JBK Paddlers Club - Whitsunday Island Trip

JBK Paddlers Club have returned from a brilliant week of laughs and gorgeous paddling in the Whitsunday Group of islands in North Queensland. As with all adventures, this trip had all elements of weather, characters and excitement including sun,wind, rain and perfect sunsets. Salty Sea Dog Sea Kayaking provided us with a local guide, Mark who assisted Tracy with the task of leading the intrepid JBK Paddlers from Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island to Hook Island and back to Shute Harbour by luxury barge. The 4 day kayaking trip and overnight stopover in Airlie Beach before and after the trip proved to be a very popular option and will be an annual event in our calender to satisfy the needs of Paddlers of all levels.

Stepping off the boat in Davenport to the fresh Tasmania air I think it is the first time I have seen my car register the temperature at 6 degrees, during the DAY!!. This Trip to Tassie was our first and my husband John and I were excited about the vast paddling opportunities that lay ahead. We headed straight to Hobart to meet some friends and organize our first kayaking of the trip. After an afternoon visit to the Cascade Brewery we decided to meet near Port Arthur the following day. The Tasman Peninsula has so many options, it is hard to choose where to dip your paddle. We put in at Stewarts bay and paddled south along the coast past the Port Arthur heritage sight. It is a beautiful stretch of water and once past the Isl. of the dead you can paddle straight down the arm and out toward Cape Pillar and the dramatic southern Tassie Cliff lines.

This is also a great way to see the Port Arthur ruins, both sides of the waterway have sheltered beaches for landing sites and rest breaks and can also shelter you from prevailing winds.

Our next planned paddle was to launch at Fortesque Bay and paddle to the well known landmarks of the Lanterns and the Candle stick (or the Totem pole).

There is a great remote camp site in the national park just inside the tree line from the beach. Campsites are $13 a night and your can purchase tokens for the hot water in the showers and buy firewood from the ranger. There is nothing there however so make sure you bring everything you need before driving out there. We launched at dawn as the forecast was for very strong winds again. The sunrise was gorgeous and with the swell picking up and conditions a little bumpy we paddled out to the spectacular coastal monoliths. The water is very cold and dark in this part of the world which makes for an imposing environment and it is seriously important to dress for the water temp and conditions and carry the right safety gear as there is no phone reception in the area. With a PLB in my pocket and VHF radio and flares handy we had to stay about 500m off the cliff line to minimize the rebound but the lanterns where as awesome as I had imagined they would be and I envied the fur seals carefree play amongst the kelp. With the wind picking up we paddled north along the coast before coming back to the shelter of the outskirts of Fortescque bay. With many coves and small bays hiding more seals and the William Pitt ship wreck, we had our choice of stops to enjoy a morning snack before heading back to our launch point.

Waking one morning to snow around our tent we packed up quickly and took off for slightly warmer conditions (air temp not water temp) along the east coast where we had a tough time again choosing our places to kayak. One to come back for would be Maria Island but we headed for the Freycinet Peninsula for our next kayaking adventure and then onto St Helens and the Bay of Fires which were each stunning beautiful in their own way. With wind and big swell forecast and delivering, it was extremely important to get an accurate weather forecast before venturing out on an unfamiliar coastline (any coastline for that matter) but we found sheltered areas to land and launch and used coastal features to protect us from the wildest conditions.

As our Tassie experience moved into its final days a highlight of the trip was getting to paddle around Dove Lake at Cradle Mountain. We were so fortunate with the weather here, where you can normally expect “four seasons in one day”. With sun beaming down from a cloudless sky I felt a bit of vertigo as I paddled across the open lake. You couldn’t see the water around you only the mirror reflection of rainforest and snow touched mountains, a sensation that will stay with me for some time. It is a 6klm round trip on the lake and a very unique way to experience it.

We also enjoyed many great walks in the areas we visited and with such a diverse range of paddling environments in such a relatively short distance from one another this will definitely not be my last sea kayaking trip to our southern most state.

Last Week the JBK Instructors Tracy Gibson and Mat Goodwin conducted an intensive 5 Day Sea skills program for 8 Candidates of Cert 4 Sea Kayaking Specialty in Outdoor Education at Charles Sturt University and Goulbourn Valley Tafe. This course encompassed the necessary Units of Competency for the Diploma and the Australian Canoeing Sea Skills Award. Beginning with the JBK Sea Skills 1 & 2, followed by an extended day trip,Rolling Course, and Sea Skills 3 the candidates spent the week developing and honing skills in a variety of environments.

Day 1 - at the JBK Store at Huskisson

After a successful week of solid paddling and theory, candidates undertook their final assessment with Ross Boardman in Sea Conditions on a magnificent day on Jervis Bay with a journey into the open sea past Bowen Island. Rescue Scenarios were thrown into mix as paddlers problem solved towing, injured paddler management and equipment variances.

All 8 Candidates, exhibited sound kayak rolling technique and a great week was enjoyed by all involved. A further JBK Sea Kayaking Guide Course is to be conducted later in the year to progress the Candidates to the Professional Levels of Competency.

Hawkesbury Classic Entrant & Seaward Kayaks

The team at JBK would like to congratulate Frank Busch , our regular visitor from Germany on his completion of the Hawkesbury Classic Marathon. Frank and Annette makes the yearly pilgrimage to Australia to participate and catch up on some Sea Kayaking in the Jervis Bay Region.

JBK offered Frank our brand new Seaward Ascente Sea Kayak for the race and he achieved a personal best time of 14hours and 23minutes. Fantastic effort Frank. JBK Team members Jhn and Tracy Gibson assisted with road crew support and provided moral support and no doubt a great deal of humour to keep Fran buoyed throughout the night.

JBK Paddlers Club Paddle

After a week of high wind and big swell, it was a relief to be able to get out on the water for the official first paddle of the JBK Paddlers Club. The forecast of southerly winds encouraged us to head down into Booderee National Park for a launch at Iluka, with the intention of heading out towards Bowen Island, with a morning tea break on Murrays Beach before heading back.

Bill, Sandra, Wayne and Mel were all super keen as we packed our boats on the beach, especially as the wind was calm and Jervis Bay was looking its exceptional best, with only a small wave breaking along the shoreline.Sandra & Bill - Open Water

A very gentle following sea allowed us to make fast progress as we made a beeline towards the northern tip of Bowen Island, all eyes peeled for the resident dolphins or perhaps even a seal or a migrating humpback whale. As we approached the island a rolling swell coming through the heads made life a bit more interesting, but it had died off enough that we all felt safe as we passed the tip of the island and headed towards Point Perpendicular for a few hundred meters.
No doubt we all would have enjoyed the open water crossing of the heads, but everyone was keen for a cuppa and some of the famous JBK carrot cake so we turned around and made our way back towards Murrays Beach, taking advantage of the crystal clear water on the inside coast of the island to spot hundreds of fish and even a couple of rays. As usual Bowen Island was full of its resident bird life, with a couple of lazy Pelicans watching us cruise past.

A relaxing rest on the beach left the group recharged and ready for the return leg, where we planned to hug the coastline, again to make the most of some of the clearest water imaginable. Coming past Murrays Beach boat ramp, sure enough a pod of our freindly dolphins made an appearance, coming quite close to our kayaks, but not staying still for a photo. Yet more dolphins were spotted by Bill and Sandra off Hole in the Wall.

The pace slowed noticably along past Scottish Rocks and Bristol Point as everyone took in the beautiful scenery of the northern shore of Booderee National Park until a nice gentle landing back at Iluka meant the end of the trip and an analysis of the stats thanks to Wayne's GPS (13.6klm, average speed 5kph including stops, good performance team!).

Hopefully this will be the start of heaps of great adventures for the JBK Paddlers Club, and thanks to our very first club paddlers for a great morning on Jervis Bay.

In what can only be described as a devastating blow to Tracy and Bonnie, Tracy has been injured in a pre comp warm up and will be returning home from portugal early. A collision with another paddler has resulted in a serious shoulder injury that will require immediate attention on her return and end her campaign for 2009. Our hearts are with you Tracy and we wish you a safe return and very speedy recovery as it wont be the same in the surf without you.

Tracy Gibson and Bonnie Tregenza from Jervis Bay NSW fly out this sunday to represent Australia in the World Surf Kayak Championships at Santa Cruz Portugal from the 23rd July till the 1st August. The event will see Tracy and Bonnnie compete in the Womens High Performance Class and after several years of solid training and a previous World Championships behind Tracy and almost 2 years of training and experience from Bonnie they are now perefctly positioned to perform in this field.
From the Team at Mega Australia and Jervis Bay Kayak Co, and from our many clients we would like to wish them the best of luck in the competition as we know that they will shine in this event and fly the flag high for Australia and the sport of Surf Kayaking .

Mega Surf Kayaks Australia in association with Cumec Magazine is proud to announce that Michael Williamson of Alexandra, New Zealand was the winner of a brand new Mega Maverick Surf Kayak. Michael correctly answered the question 'Where in Australia are Mega Surf Kayaks produced?' the competition was run over two issues of Cumec Magazine and received numerous entries from throughout both New Zealand and Australia.

When first contacted about his prize Michael's excitement was inspiring, and he is looking forward to taking the new boat out in the Surf at his family's holiday home in Waikouiati near Dunedin. Michael is a member of the Central Otago Whitewater Club and has been an enthusiastic paddler since 'a long time ago'. The Mega Maverick will now take precedence over his classic surf shoe which has seen 'better days'.

The Weekend of the 9th and 10th of May saw a cast of about 20 Surf Kayakers from varying disciplines travel to the Sunshine Coast of QLD from as far away as Sth'n NSW and Mid north Queensland. Surf Kayak Competition Cotton Tree Beach QLD

The social comp was held at Cotton Tree Beach at Maroochydore and set a good standard for the future of things to come for Surf Kayaking in Australia. Heats were held from 7.30am on Saturday the 9th of May culminating with a Woman's final and and Open Final.

This was only the second Surf Kayak Comp of its type to be held in Eastern Australia, the first of which was held a year ago in ( NSW ), and with the interest shown from Waveski, Surf and Sea Kayakers, there is plenty of potential for many more into the future.

Some great action was seen throughout the day.

The Team from Jervis Bay Kayak Co and Mega Surf Kayaks Australia made the 18hour drive through the night to attend the weekend and we all learnt heaps, met some great people from Qld and beyond and got into some decent surf conditions. We look forward to catching up with them again in the near future.

Mega Surf Kayaks Austalia will be heading off on a road trip to Mooloolabah on the Sunshine Coast of Qld next weekend to catch up with Darren Bason. A social day will be held there on Saturday the 9th May and we thought we'd bring up some demo kayaks and a few new stock boats so you can come and check out the range and maybe take a few for a paddle.

I hope everyone got out to find a few waves over the ANZAC day weekend. As the swell hit here on the south coast, Bonnie and I had a great couple of days training.

With a forecast for solid easterly swell and westerly winds we headed out for the dawn surf down Bendalong way. The waves were on and we got some great rides as John captured the moment with his camera.

2009 sees the Australian Surf Kayak Team preparing again to compete at the World Surf Kayak Championships. This year it is to be held at Santa Cruz in Portugal from the 23rd July to the 2nd August. The team comprises of Paddlers Tracy Gibson and Bonnie Tregenza who will be competeing in the High Performance class.

Both girls are passionate paddlers and with training in full swing for the competition you will find them in the surf and at the gym several times a week and working hard fundraising for the trip.

At the 2007 World Championships at Mundaka Spain, Tracy was the first person to compete for Australia. After winning her way to a position in the semi final Tracy finished 5th overall. Her aim this year is for a place in the final to put herself in a position to win the event. Tracy works as a professional sea kayak instructor for the Jervis Bay Kayak Company. She has been kayaking for 8 years. More specifically, she has been surf kayaking for nearly 4 years. Bonnie works as a professional outdoor activities instructor in several areas including sea kayaking (with Jervis Bay Kayak Company), canoeing, hiking and rock climbing. Bonnie has been surf kayaking for 1½ years. This will be her first time competing at an international level. She enjoys pushing her comfort zone and continually working to improve her surfing. She is excited to be surfing world class waves and meeting some of the world’s top paddlers.

The month of March sees the Team at JBK busy at work conducting various experience programs for schools from as far away as the Mid North Coast, the Blue Mountains and the ACT. The ability to tailor and cater for the Outdoor Education Experience needs of Schools and Universities is one of the reasons why JBK is the Leading National Training Provider for Australian Canoeing.
For fourteen years JBK has conducted Day and Expedition Programs in Expedition Sea Kayaks and shorter programs in Sit On Top Kayaks to the Public and Private School System.With Professional Sea Kayak Instructors and Assessors on Staff and the best equipment in the Business we provide the perfect introduction to Kayaking and continuing education programs for repeat visitors.
Last week we spent 3 Days on a self contained Sea Kayaking Expedition with Alfred Deakin High School from the ACT. This school has a fantastic Outdoor Education Program and the students are of the highest calibre. Prepared to paddle when necessary , laugh when require and even sing a little ( ok, a lot ), to make the trip all it can be.

Bushcamping is the brief we work to where the students are required to commune with nature and each other, with no outside influences. This trip was one of our best yet. Perfect weather, heaps of Sun,a little wind, a little rain, and a lot of fun, even Rick, Rob and Trent the residing teachers had a ball. Thanks guys for a great experience you really made it a cracker.

JBK - 5 Blokes and a River

Just for a laugh, it was decided that 5 Local JB guys would tackle the wilds of Clyde River, Yadboro to Shallow Crossing. Although the trip took about twelve hours and two days , it proved to be an incredibly picturesque adventure with long stretches of comfortable paddling. log jams and much dragging through the gravel races and small rapids.

Starting in theUpper runnable sections at Yadboro, the river quickly runs in to a remote wilderness that would be a difficult walk out if required providing great scenery and tall timbers and long shallow running pools of beautifully clear water.

Each section stepping down to the next with a small race or rapid, some runnable, most not, but the boys laughed and rammed into each other as we made our way to Shallow Crossing 25km away.

7 hours of pretty continous paddling saw us at the upside down bridge north of Brooman for our campsite and a great fire kept the light rain off us throughout the evening. Waking to more light rain we quicky packed up and hit the river at 8 am for another full day of quality scenery and intimate river environment to Brooman then a maze of 4 foot round logs and much portaging to the running section just south to last 8km of long uninterupted pools to Shallow Crossing.

This trip requires some good planning, as the car shuttle to the starting point is about 1.5 hours, and some food is always a good idea Able, although Maccas at Ulladulla saved you on day one.

The quality of the experience is sensational on this trip, great scenery, but there is lack of good campsites on the upper stretch, so be prepared to stop when you find one. We found the kayaks at around 3.7 mtrs were optimal as they could negotiate the rock gardens more easily than the longer type kayaks. Plastic is essential as the river is a graveyard for fibreglass canoes, they simply wont cut it, and be prepared to have some serious wear on your kayak or the one you borrow from an old friend.............................

JBK - Just a perfect day.

It dawned on me today whilst paddling my New Wilderness Tempest 170 Pro out past Bowen Island, that I had owned in the last twenty years of Sea Kayaking, ( 15yrs of which operating JBK ) personally, 11 Brand New Sea Kayaks , and literally hundreds of Sea Kayaks over the years in our hire and tour operation fleet.

Such a realisation gets you wondering whether there is really many differences from model to model, or whether I had succumbed to the bright and colourful gel coat or the newest in comfort outfitting yet again. At JBK we are dealing with so many choices now on a daily basis with Specifications, layups, colour options , rudder fittings, varying price range, quality and usage options.

The fact is that, there are marked differences in each craft, some worth noting, some not so, but for just a few hours today,I found myself taking in the water movement around me, the clarity of the water, the temperature of the sea and air, and the sureal atmosphere of the bushfire smoke that moved in with the brisk southerly change cloaking JB and the 9 or so warships that cruised nearby.

Although I had done it thousands of times before, Janet and I simply went "Sea Kayaking". There was no talk of boat length, shape, or style, we just paddled and chatted about the Wallaby that joined us on the beach and took it all in. Coffee and Lunch on Murrays Beach and a couple of Eskimo Rolls on the way home.

The day was perfect and I remembered today, after an extremely busy summer of facilitating kayaking at JBK for thousands kayakers, why I love this Sport. Kayaking is a lifestyle recreation and the gear just allows you to do it, not better, maybe a little more comfortably, maybe a little quicker than your last kayak, but don't get too tied up in the Specs of your kayak, enjoy it for what it is. There is far to much emphasis on boat specs and equally to many opinions as to what constitues a good sea kayak. Sure, good advice is always important but one should exercise caution as to where that advice is sought from.

On your next paddling adventure, take a good loook around you, soak it up, it is incredible where the kayak allows you access to. I am looking forward to the upcoming Autumn and Winter, as the seasons change, as the wildlife and sea conditions vary, and as the colour of the sky goes from bright blue to a more subtle aqua tone, remember how fortunate we are to be able to access and immerse ourselves in our waterways.

JBK - Women In Kayaking Weekend.

Well it was a beautiful sunny, hot weekend for our Women in Kayaking, (WIKS) program held on the 7th/8th February 2009. With the forecast for 30+ degrees and strong winds we held the skills day at Palm Beach at Sanctuary Point. Totally protected from the Northeaster the ladies started the day with the basics on equipment orientation and handling.

We moved through stroke techniques on the water, and while there were some nervous starters everyone quickly picked up the skills and gained their confidence quickly. With the promise of extra Carrot Cake for the first to capsize there was great commitment shown in the Sweep stroke practice session with Cate getting the honors of first one to take a swim. The rescue techniques followed in groups with everyone learning to perform a Wet exit, Assisted Rescue and Paddle Float Self Rescue. The girls dealt well with their reservations about capsizing with big smiles and lots of laughs and encouragement.

After a great first outing everyone pulled up well for our Jervis Bay Explorer Paddle the next day. With the same weather forecast we filled our kayaks with delicious morning tea and headed out from Callala Bay for a fantastic paddle to Carama Inlet and Hare Bay. Crystal Clear water and a dolphin or two gave us a brilliant morning on the water as we chatted and paddled taking in the surrounds of the Marine Park. After a relaxing stop for coffee/cake and fruit on a deserted beach we had the wind behind us for a nice ride home surfing the waves. Thankyou to Maria for "volunteering" to demonstrate a capsize in "real terms" as a sneaky gust of wind played with us near shore.

Well done to all the ladies on our weekend ... Everyone paddle extremely well and Bonnie and I had a great time kayaking with you all. We look forward to seeing you on the Women in Kayaking Program Part 2 on the 4th/5th of April 2009.

Our Next Overnight Womens Kayak Camping Trip ( WIKS In the Sticks ) is also planned for the 16th - 17th May 2009.

It's that time of year again and before we get into the swing of summer operations, the decision was made to combine our Christmas Party with some serious fun. To do this Tracy's suggestion of a morning paddle in the Fun Yaks at Penrith Whitewater Stadium was a reality.

The 8 of us in the Troop Carrier saw us heading to Penrith for a 1030 start.Geared up and ready to roll, the first rapid saw a 100% capsize rate, proving that we were no match for the power of the waterflow.Kim quickly swapped the Funyak for her carbon slalom kayak which made her feel right at home, whilst the rest of us made repeated attempts for clean runs with varying success. The waves got bigger and we swapped from singles to doubles

JBK - Womens Kayak Camping Trip ( WIKS in the Sticks Weekend)

Often the idea of paddling off to a distant overnight beach campsite is what allures us to the lifestyle of Sea Kayaking.That image of the tents on the beach, the campfire,great company and the reflection of the moon on the sea is certainly high on the priority of all of the JBK Team.

Couple this with a group of 5 very competent Women and you the have the recipe for some good laughs and the enjoyment that can only be had when you get away from it all.

In late September Tracy lead four ultra keen paddlers to the upper reaches of Jervis Bay for a weekend of laughs, challenges and maybe some Bundy and Coke, and set up camp in a beautiful little campsite overlooking the bay.

JBK'S first WIKS( Women in Kayaking ) in the Sticks weekend had all of the elements of any great expedition. The Weather played it's part promising some strong winds and certainly delivered some,so it was decided that early starts were the go as the return home saw them testing their skills in some sea conditions designed to test their new found skills and equipment. Clear skies prevailed and the weekend was a success with only wet bums and an appetite for more, as we plan to hold more of these weekends, where the freedom of the kayak is the key to accessing some brilliant locations in our area.

A big thanks to Shannon,Karen, Rachel, and Kerri for making our first WIKS in the Sticks a HUGE success and we look forward to seeing you all on later activities.

The MEGA "Neutron RV" Surf Kayak ( Made Huskisson by JBK ) is featured in this short video. Footage was shot at Crescent Head NSW Australia. The MEGA Neutron RV'S ability to carve sharp turns and maintain high speed whilst charging down the line is highlighted clearly.

The "Mega Neutron" has a proven track record in Competitions Worldwide and the RV Model has a slightly higher volume in the rear than the earlier Neutron, the rails continue into the stern of this kayak improving it's carving ability. Release from the white water also cleaner allowing for better positioning when regaining the pocket.

In shooting this video we tried to concentrate on demonstrating the Neutron RV's unbelievable maneuverability and speed, all attributes required to gain the edge over the larger wave types and of course the competition.

The Team at JBK, are Outdoor Industry Professionals and take on such training with enthusiasm and even the Winter Water Temps don't stop our guys from throwing themselves in for some some serious and not so serious rescue and mishap management exercises. The event took place last Saturday and saw a mix of Theory, Presentations,and practical exercises that ensures the most up to date and current information is delivered to our customers at each level of activity.

This great bit of action shot at Crescent Head whilst on our annual Surf Kayaking Safari. The Combi may be familiar to some as it has appeared in some popular surf mags and websites. Tow in Surfers were visiting the area and decided to attempt the long drive north along Crescent Head Beach to Hat Head when disaster struck. Nicknamed the the "Pasha Volksa Stoka" , the sister ship of the now infamous bulk carrier the "Pasha Bulka" was relieved of its beaching on NSW's very own Nobby's Beach in Newcastle only the day before this disaster.Did the "Pasha Volksa Stoka" survive the ordeal, luckily the quick actions of the local cafe owner saved the day and after a serious flushing the old Volksy started first time.

JBK - Team Annual Staff Expedition

Each winter the Team at JBK Set aside some time to take on an adventurous challenge to push the limits of our paddling skills and trip planning. Last year we circumnavigated the Beecroft Peninsula. A 35km paddle that takes in the massive cliffs from Pt Perpendicular to Currarong and half of the coastline of Jervis Bay.
This year the scene was set to round the Berwherre Peninsula on the southern side of the bay.

This Sea Kayaking Trip is approx 28km in length and passes some of the tallest cliffs on Mainland Australia and is home to the resident Seal Colony and Little Penguins of Bowen Island. Little did we expect ( absolutely )to see some Humpbacks along the way and we were treated with no less than 16 migrating whales, sometimes too close for comfort. What a cracker this trip was.

I have done some amazing paddles in my life but this one is one of the most memorable ever.Thanks to Janet, Bonnie, Tracy and Matthew for a great day.

JBK - Education Sea Guide Assessments

Last thursday Sea Guide Level 2 Candidates - Matthew Goodwin, Bonnie Tregenza, and Fiona Semmens attended the final assessment event held at Murrays Beach Jervis Bay in the Booderee National Park. Preparation for this day is one that can't be underestimated, as candidates are required to not only exhibit sound paddling skills, guiding and workplace knowledge, but to have a depth of understanding in the field of group management whilst taking into account environment, climate, weather, and local conditions. To ensure a breadth and depth of experience candidates are also required to provide documented evidence of experience in the above. Armed with this knowledge and experience an on water assessment was conducted in open water conditions to satisfy the requirements of the highly rated Australian Canoeing Award.
As the industry assessor for Australian Canoeing in this area, it was a pleasure to conduct the event and confirm the satisfactory result for each of the candidates. I would like to thank Bonnie , Fiona and Mat for their preparedness as it is blatentley obvious when candidates are ill prepared, but no such case on this day was eveident.

Take a group of 7 enthusiastic women and add some more advanced Sea Kayaking Skills and you have the elements of a sensational weekend. Although predicted to be adverse weather conditions Jervis Bay turned on a cracker with light winds and perfect sea conditions for our "Women in Kayaking Level 2 Program. Instructor Tracy Gibson, spent the weekend outlining the finer points of paddling and some mishap management practice ensured a higher level of skill and confidence was gained by the group.

Plenty of time is taken throughout this program to take in the sights and as you can see by the photo, the scenery in Jervis Bay is second to none. Thanks to Shona for the photos. Tracy, JBK's Training Cordinator and Head Instructor, Tracy Garner and JBK's Sea Instructor John Gibson were married in true Jervis Bay Perfection on Greenfield's Beach ( NSW Jervis Bay National Park's showcase beach) at 1pm on Friday the 2nd May followed by a brilliant reception on the Dolphin Watch Cruises Tekin III.The after party at Erowal Bay was enjoyed by all. We had such a great time and thank John and Tracy and their parents for a superb afternoon.

JBK Surf Kayaking - Surf Kayak Competition Gerroa

This Saturday the Make for the "Break Surf Kayak Club" held it's surf kayak Comp and Social Day at the Magnificent 7 Mile Beach on the Sth Coast of NSW. With a line up of old and some new faces competitors battled it out in 19 minute heats to reach a final heat in the mid afternoon. This Open Class Competition saw a range of craft from IC to HP Kayaks displaying the varying capabilities in some keenly contested competition.

Using a Gath helmet as the "hat" , keeping it real we have come up with our schedule which has men and women battling it out at Gerroa on Saturday. SATURDAY MARCH 8TH 2008 - 7 MILE BEACH GERROA NSW

Grab your surf kayak and make your way to 7 Mile Beach Gerroa for a fun filled adrenalin charged day of light hearted competition and a free surf session to display your latest move.

On offer will be a day of fun and plenty of action with an open category consisting of a Competition of 20 minute heats of 2 – 4 Surf Kayakers. Each heat will be scored and judged by Tracy Garner ( current World No 5 ) and Ross Boardman ( Mega Surf Kayaks Australia ).

Points are scored based on Surf Maneuvers made in the power section of the wave. Scoring is based on the top 3 waves of each heat (maximum 10 waves per heat). The top 2 surfers in each heat will progress to the next round culminating in a final.

Judges will be looking for range of other skills including wave selection, correct surf etiquette and length of ride, and end maneuvers.

We will have a focus on making the day fun whilst adhering to some necessary safety rules, but we expect to see some up and coming surfers ripping it up in a relaxed and great social atmosphere.

Surfers should present a surf kayak from the High Performance Class.

Three years running the annual Santa Ride was held last Thursday attracting 100 santas from all over and 1 Unicycle . The Santa Ride was the idea of Brenda VanHuesen and John Gibson raising $1070 in much needed funds for the Huskisson Fire Brigade. Startin from Vincentia shopping ctr and finishing at the Husky Pub it is one of the major events on the JBK Team agenda. Including some radical Santa outfits the relaxed pace ride of about 2km is a spectacle that creates a Xmas spirit like no other.

Although considered to be a very capable mountain biker in his own mind Santa ( Ross Boardman ) was the only Santa to fly over the handle bars whilst weaving thru the mass of Santas , luckily not breaking anything but his ego was shattered for the night as he made fun of the crash amongst his peers. Tracy Garner , Janet Boardman, Bonnie Tregenza, Andrew Mackenzie, and John Gibson took part also, and we were missing Kim Hair and Mat Goodwin as somebody booked them in to run a Sea Kayaking Trip for the NSW Police Force, so as to keep them busy whilst the inebriated Santas made their way to the pub.

In nasty onshore conditions the Womens World Surf Kayak High Performance Heats took to the water yesterday with 2 heats of the remaining 8 competitors. 20-30knot winds buffeted the coast making conditions messy and often unreadable for all competitors, it came down to wire with on a couple of points separating the group. Results saw our Tracy Place 5th Overall with 36.5 points and the end of her campaign in Spain. Although disappointed with the conditions, Tracy can hold her head high in the know that this is an amazing result., it has been a tremendous effort to place so high in the rankings for this competition. Congrats Tracy we are all very proud of your effort and cant wait to hear the stories and see the photos of your trip.

JBK - TEAM Tracy takes 1st place in the Qtr Finals at Mundaka

News from the Aussies Camp in Spain and it's all good again. Tracy rated a score of 46.5, in the highest score in the Open Womens High Performance Class in Spain Today. Up against Roberta Borsari from Brasil Tracy gained the upper hand in a close 1 point margin. In a subsequent heat , Tamsin Green from the English Team scores 45.5 also. Tracy's dream run has also seen her entry in the "Rest of the World Team " where she scored a 2nd place in her heat against Valerie Bertrand ( 1st ) , Tracy (2nd ) and Roberta Borsari (3rd place).

Conditions in Bakio have seen nasty beach break conditions and a number of swims have ensued amongst the competitors. The World Womens Semi Finals will see the highest level of competition yet, narrowing the field to eight competitors followed by the final series this weekend. Keep a watch out for our Aussie sensation, the competition just got a whole lot hotter. Go for it Tracy.

News just in and the score card says it all. Tracy has surfed her way to the highest score in round one of the Open Women's High Performance Class at Bakio today. The field of 24 of the worlds best female surf kayakers battled it out at the Bakio Break. What an amazing achievement this is. In her words, "I surfed my arse off, Had a great time". Photo after the heat above. Heat Score was 55 points ( twenty points ahead of her nearest heat Rival, Valerie Bertrand from Canada, and 10 points clear of Roberta Borsari from Brasil and 4 points clear of England's Tamsin Green. Qtr Finals are likely to be held on Thursday the 25th October then semi and final in a weeks time. Congratulations Tracy you really are a a legend.

Tracy and John flew out today bound for Mundaka / Bakio in Northern Spain for her assault on the World Surf Kayaking Championships 2007. Staff and friends have just returned from a week at Crescent Head in Nth'n NSW where the Surf was awesome and the company even better. Camping on the entrance to the beach we undertook a solid week of Surf kayaking and relaxation. With some decent swell, we took to the break and had some amazing rides. The week served as a practice session for Tracy Garner, currently training up for the World Surf Kayak Championships in Spain in October this year. The rest of us, well it was just a great excuse to surf our heads off.

Never to turn down a chance at good promotion, we hit the jackpot last week when we were asked to be part of the filming for NSW Tourisms New Footage for the upcoming ad campaigns. As a result We met the film crew at the Magnificent Murray's Beach this morning and had a few hours of shooting. It has come to our attention that Surf Kayaking has caught the eye on many paddlers around the country and the world. JBK Surf Kayaking Course has been designed to cater for the needs of paddlers who possess intermediate to advanced skills, those that are required to handle the Addictive and Adrenalin Pumping Surf Zone. Saturday saw a Trio of super keen female paddlers flew up from Tassie, and another keen American paddler( on study time in Australia ) to undertake the program with Tracy, Janet and Bonnie. The result, well, it was a mixture of exhiliration and extreme fun as these new surf kayaking devotees ripped it up at caves beach in an all female Exression Session.Putting new meaning to the the term "Girls at Play", this was no place for the feint hearted, high skill level and competant surf skills were the order of the day. Backed up with another day with the 'Make for the Break Surf Kayak Club "on Sunday and we had the best Surf Kayaking Weekend ever. Perfect glassy 3 footers with the occasional rogue wave to mix it up. As we have always said " if you've got the skills, use them ".Rossco

Bonnie Tregenza from Charles Sturt Uni in Albury has returned to sit for her Australian Canoeing Sea Leader Award. A busy month ahead where Bonnie will participate in Activities from Sea Kayaking Tours, Courses, Training and Surf Kayaking skill progression not from a novice perpective but from a leadership point of view. Her skills have taken her from a new paddler last december to a Leadership Role, born purely out of the will to succeed and develop a real understanding of what it takes to become an experience leader and guide. We have lined up such a variety of activities that Bonnie wont know whats hit her and then we'll add some night paddling and extreme surf kayaking just to test her out. So far, well Bonnie is taking it in her stride, the Team can't think of what else to throw at her ( ahh maybe some shop time will fix her up ) hey Bonnie. Epping Boys High School arrved to be greeted with absolutely perfect conditions for their school holiday kayaking adventure. What a great way to spend time with your mates and a few dads, heading off into the wilderness by Sea Kayak. Our School Sea Kayaking Programs are quickly gaining in momentum. It's what we love to do, as everyone including the staff, ( see photo - they look happy don't they)gets a great deal of satisfaction from the self contained overnight trips. We look forward to taking these guys out again as they took to the paddling like a duck to water. Mega Surf Kayaks OZ - NSW Sea Kayak Club Surf Session

Tracy and Ross lined up at the NSW Sea Kayak Club Rock and Roll Weekend to conduct a Surf Kayaking Session for fellow members. Little did we know that with the interest so high that we would have some of the Country's keenest and what turned out to be most talented Sea Kayak leaders and Instructors. From the the outset it proved to be an adrenalin charged session with surfers taking it all on and providing some massive entertainment. Left to right : Ross Boardman, Tracy Garner, Huw Kingston, Greg Murray, Laurie Geoghegan, Mark Sundin, Nick Gill, and John Wylde. On occassion is wasn't uncommon to see two or three paddlers jostling for priority on the wave resulting in some exciting moves. A special visit from Justine Curgenven and Alun from "This Is The Sea" series had a bash also demonstrating sound skills in the surf zone.

March is one of the most satisfying months for our staff as we conduct a wide range of activities with school from the lcal area and from Canberra and Sydney. The focus of our programs lend themselves to Marine Studies, Outdoor Ed and Biology. Shoalhaven High School in Nowra, Epping Boys High, Alfred Deakin High School in ACT, and Daramallan College in the ACT have all visited the area and had succesful, educational and fulfulling programs with us and we lok forward to seeing them again next year as our kayaking trips are becoming an integral part of their prorgams.

SURF KAYAK CLUB SESSION GERROA

Today saw awesome summer weather and a bunch of keen paddlers , how could you not have fun. Although the waves could have been bigger, we were still able to check out the styles of 11 keen surf kayakers. In a relaxed atomosphere, paddlers from Sydney, Southern shoalhaven and Berry took part jumping in and out of a range of Surf Kayaks and putting them through their paces. The potential of the group was clear from the outset when flat spins and 360s were being knocked out by Tracy and Mick, and the first aid kit came out in mid session to repair a cut finger from a broken timber paddle, Tracy leapt at the chance to practice her first aid skills. JBK Huskisson Store Update

It seems like an age ago that we started the building but we should expect to be in by about May so we can spend winter getting used to the new space. Having two stores will offer an epanded product line , but for now we are busily organising electrics, data, and equipment to update the feel of the place. In the meantime, Mega Kayak Manaufacturing and Sales have taken up a deal of Ross' time whilst Tracy has been on the water daily runing everything from Basic Skills to Private Rolling courses. Janet has focused a lot of her efforts into expanding the range into some superb outdoor clothing and accesories that will be avialable in the upcoming Winter. The next two months is a brilliant time for Sea Kayaking as we enjoy warmer water temps and calmer wind conditions and we look forward to assisting you with all of your paddling needs.

Charles Sturt Uni Placement Trainee Bonnie Tregenza successfully completed a month of Work Experience with JBK. Bonnie exhibited the highest level of enthusiasm and undertook our complete Australian Canoeing Sea Skills Program culminating in her sucessfull assessment yesterday on Jervis Bay. Our new store is coming along nicely, albeit a little behind schedule. Roof is on, and is taking shape. Huge interest as our signs have been pastered across it all summer directing customers to our Vincentia Store. Schedule is set for end of April at this stage, so likely to be moving in over the May Period ready for next season.

JBK - Adventure School Programs

School Programs keep us busy through the month of November and this group have just completed their 9th annual 4 day Sea Kayaking Expedition with JBK Co. Fantastic Weather conditions saw the group of 16 paddle to their basecamp on the St Georges Basin to enjoy above average temperatures and superb paddling in downwind conditions. These trips really bring out the best in the young paddlers and we see a real growth in their abilities over the four days. Culminating in an open sea paddle on Jervis Bay the group spent their last day on the southern rim of the Jervis Bay Marine Park, swimming snorkelling and enjoying the clear water and World Class Sea Kayaking Environment.

JBK Education - Womens Program

Last weekend our popular Women In Kayaking Program was conducted by Tracy Garner and the weekend went off with our participants gaining a high level of competence in varying weather conditions. Jervis Bay put on a show with Humpback Whales and marine creatures sighted throughout the weekend. As Nicci Riley put it : -

"I can't speak highly enough of our instructor
Tracy,her enthusiasm,competence and support was
 amazing.  JBK's equipment, organisation and
support are first class.It is wonderful to spend
 a weekend with like-minded females and to come
out the other end with a new skill and confidence.
I was weary, but not sore, and already looking

Following the success of Mega Surf Kayaks Manufacture in Australia we have embarked on another exciting project. A month or so ago we took receipt of two High end Patterns from Mega UK for the Mega Surf Kayaks in Composite Slite Construction - Megatron and Neutron . Moulds are curently under construction and we expect to see a proto in the next couple of weeks.

What a day, it doesnt get much better than this.Sea Leader candidate Mick Greaves spent the morning demonstrating his sea kayaking and rescue skills last thursday. Perfect weather, and mild Sea Conditions saw Ross Boardman conducting the Assessment whilst on a Sea Paddle both inside and outside Jervis Bay. The Sea Cliffs of Bowen Island are an ideal place to simulate real sea conditions. JBK Course coordinator/Sea Kayaking Instructor " Tracy Garner " and new staff member Craig Rinaldi joined in the day for a refreshing look at the outer edge of Jervis Bay.
During rescue simulation off Bowen Island a female humpback and calf edged within 10 metres of patient Ross Boardman who was in the water with a simulated dislocated shoulder. A very succesful day indeed.

There has long been a need for specific activities that cater for Women that generally identify with different learning outcomes than men. Our Women In Kayaking Programs provide an avenue for you to achieve a level of confidence that you may otherwise not attain in a mixed environment. Attention given to handling, lifting techniques and overall correct technique that can enable you as a Kayaker to get the most out of this amazing lifestyle. Around 60% of our client base is female and we have 3 professional Female Instructors ( who live to kayak ) to guide you each step of the way. So if it's Calm Water or Sea Paddling this weekend will establish the basis for sound efficient technique and safety, in a fun, relaxed social setting.

JBK Huskisson Store Update

October 6th and 7th saw the arrival of over 40 pre cast slabs to the site and a crane lifeted each into position. Props adjust the level of the walls and JBK Huskisson store takes on a whole new look. Both our store and the 4 units above afford a brilliant view of Jervis Bay overlooking the Whitesands Park.

Slab Poured and looking real back in Late August. Rain hampering efforts to get moving on the project. Great weather since and Pre- Cast Slab walls installed on the 6th and 7th of October.
